How can i find a cheap plane ticket to NYC?

I wanted to go xmas during winter break. But it seems like the ticket prices go up during the holidays. Is there any other way to find a cheap ticket to go? Like would there be any chance of getting lucky if i wait to get my ticket like 1 day before the flight or something. ( perhaps someone cancels theirs)

1. Waiting until the last minute is a bad idea. If somebody cancels, then the airlines are usually willing to bet that anyone else who wants to travel will pay full $$$. Try Hotwire or Priceline.
2. Do not wait to book your tickets if you are traveling over the holidays. Book as soon as you know you are going for sure, because the prices will continue to go up. Check out discount airlines, I am not sure where you are flying from, but check like Airtran or Southwest or Frontier, etc.
3. One of my favorite airlines is Jet Blue. They fly out of JFK airport to several major cities in the country and they do have good rates. Or you can try other websites that are advertised on TV, but I've found out that they all pretty much give you the same information or the prices may vary by a few dollars, give or take. The best thing to do is to visit these airline sites (I'll list them below) now, and plug in the dates that you wish to go. The cheapest tickets are usually for off-peak days and times. If you can, the best time to fly is usually late in the evening or middle of the night, and usually Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Friday through Monday include weekend rates because most people fly out on Fridays and return either Sundays or Mondays. Like I said before, check the rates now and write down the best prices you get now for a December flight. Then keep checking every two weeks to see if the prices change. At the same time, start saving up now so that even if you get closer to your flight time, you'll have most of the fare saved up. If possible, try to schedule your flight at least 2 weeks in advance. Don't wait for someone to cancel their flight at the last minute. Even if you get a ticket the day before you leave, you'll still pay a lot more than buying in advance.
